How a hidden 3D text sculpture works

Each side you fill in becomes a black-and-white silhouette, which is "extruded" through the cube like a stamp โ€” the letter shape carves a tunnel straight through the block from that direction. The final solid is only what remains where every tunnel overlaps: the intersection of two or three shapes. That is why, standing in front of it, you read one word; step to the side, and a completely different word appears โ€” the piece never shows both at once because geometrically it cannot.

Text vs. image

Text works instantly with any font available on your device โ€” bold, wide fonts (like Impact or Arial Black) tend to read best once turned into blocky voxels. An uploaded image is treated the same way: dark pixels become solid, light or transparent pixels become empty space, so simple high-contrast silhouettes (hearts, logos, icons) work far better than photos or fine line art.

Choosing detail level and size

Detail level sets the voxel resolution โ€” higher detail reads short words and complex shapes more clearly but takes a little longer to generate and produces a heavier file. Size is the final cube dimension in millimeters; most desktop 3D printers handle 60โ€“100 mm comfortably. As a print, use nearly solid infill (or a good number of top/bottom layers) so the letters read as solid shadows rather than showing infill patterns through them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the object look different from each side?

Because the solid is the overlap (intersection) of the shapes extruded from each direction. A point only stays solid if it belongs to every silhouette, so each face shows only its own word.

What image works best?

A simple, high-contrast black-and-white silhouette โ€” like a heart, a logo, or bold letters. Photos and thin line art rarely translate well into a blocky 3D shape.

How do I print it?

Download the STL, open it in your slicer (Cura, PrusaSlicer, etc.), and print with near-solid infill so the hidden shapes read cleanly. A flat base usually needs no supports.

Is my text or image uploaded anywhere?

No. The entire 3D model is generated inside your browser โ€” nothing is sent to a server.

Can I use 2 sides instead of 3?

Yes โ€” choose "2 sides" to hide just a front and a side view, which is simpler to read and prints a bit faster.
